Seminars

The Institute offers seminars on-campus and off-campus in a wide range of formats, from shorter 60-minute presentations to one- and two-day workshops.
Drawing from state-of-the-art research, our seminars are designed to be thoughtful, engaging, and relevant to your daily life. In each seminar we identify key principles about relationships, and we bring these principles to life with brief lectures, videotaped examples, individual exercises, and discussions. The true measure of success for our seminars is not what we say, but what you learn, remember, and apply.

Synopsis: Building Your Best Marriage will give you the knowledge and tools you need to realize the full potential of your relationship. Drawing from decades of research, Thomas Bradbury and Benjamin Karney will offer simple but powerful insights into how relationships work - and how any couple can make a good relationship better. Brief lectures, multimedia presentations, group discussions, and individual exercises will be used to address such questions as:
- What are the best ways to keep relationships fresh and energized? What should partners do if they find themselves drifting apart emotionally?
- How do children affect relationships? How can people be good parents and good partners?
- What kinds of communication benefit couples' relationships? And what forms of communication should couples avoid?
- How can partners stay close while also keeping some independence?
- Why is it sometimes hard for partners to resolve conflicts, even in a good relationship?
- How can stresses and challenges disrupt the bond that two people have formed, and how is it that some couples seem to grow stronger after dealing with a big crisis?
- Are there better and worse ways for partners to support one another?
- Do men and women want different things in relationships? How can men and women understand each other better so they can both get what they want?
Coffee and refreshments will be served.
Your registration packet will include several suggestions for lunch, both on campus and in Westwood Village.
